Volunteer Spotlight, February 2019 - Heartland Hospice

Please describe the type of work, kinds of tasks, and/or events the volunteer typically assists with:  Steve is:  a friendly visitor volunteer who visits with patients to provide socialization and companionship and assists with activities; a bereavement volunteer who visits with the bereaved who lost a loved one on our services to support them during their grieving process; and a vigil volunteer sitting vigil at the bedside with patients at the very end of life and providing relief for families to take a break at the bedside.

How many hours a week does the volunteer invest in your organization?  2-3

Why does the volunteer choose to work with your organization?  Steve says volunteering for Hospice is the most fulfilling thing he has ever done.

How did the volunteer find out about your volunteer opportunity?  Steve was interested in volunteering for hospice and came across Heartland Hospice.

What impression or interactions does the volunteer have with clients/staff/other volunteers?  Steve is very well-liked by many. He is great with communication and is always brightening patients’ days.

Why is your program important to the volunteer?  Professionalism of staff at all levels and honest dedication to the patients.

What does "volunteering" mean to the volunteer?  It gives Steve a chance to use the people skills he has been developing throughout his professional life.
