Every so often you meet a volunteer whose passion is inspiring; and when that volunteer is gone, his or her absence is felt all across the community.  Through our work with the Disaster Volunteer Reception Center and Homeless Point-In-Time Count, I have crossed paths with Mike Hoier several times.  When he passed away this past June, we lost a terrific volunteer and community member.

Mike had been involved in our Disaster Volunteer...

This year, during the $1,000 Sweepstakes, every donor who gave $1.00 per week (equal to $52 per year) during the United Way of South Wood & Adams Counties campaign received 50 chances to win.  Donors who increased their prior gift of $52.00 or more by $26.00 or more doubled their chances to 100 chances to win!  From December 6th thru December 13th, 2018, United Way’s “Prize Patrol” was busy dropping in on unsuspecting donors and adding...

When we first learned about the Wisconsin Rapids Ice Fishing Team - during the 2018 Volunteer Breakfast - we were instantly hooked!  A group that combines a sport and gives back to the community is a perfect match. This team of high school students meets regularly, goes fishing and participates in ice fishing competitions.  “We’ve been around since approximately 2011 when a couple of kids approached me about coaching the team,” said Scott...

Thanks to 481 volunteers, 77 yards were raked during United Way of South Wood & Adams Counties Day of Caring on Saturday, November 3rd!  This annual event matches teams of volunteers to local elderly and disabled residents who need help with their yards before winter.  “We couldn’t ask for better weather,” said Amy Fluno, Day of Caring Coordinator for United Way of South Wood & Adams Counties “We had a record number of volunteers and...

It’s been said that when you volunteer, you receive much more than you give.  That certainly is the case for David Arendt when he started volunteering for Park Place Adult Day Services!  Park Place Adult Day Services, located inside the Centralia Center, is a “supervised day program for dependent adults providing daily activities and socialization” (according to their website).  The staff can serve any vulnerable or dependent adult, and they...

We have exciting news at United Way of South Wood & Adams Counties’ Volunteer Center.  We will have two very special guests volunteering with us during Day of Caring on November 3rd:  Wisconsin Rapids’ own Tianna Vanderhei, 2018 Miss Wisconsin; and Danielle Moon, 2019 Miss Wisconsin Rapids!

Tianna and Danielle will be at the Grand Rapids Lion’s Club for breakfast at 8:00am.  Tianna will speak at 8:30am about the importance of...

Tari Jahns, CEO United Way of South Wood & Adams Counties

Because of you, United Way is making a great impact in our community – changing lives of those around us each and every day.  Without you, our loyal and generous donors, none of our work would be possible.  We could not deliver the programming, build coalitions or support initiatives and have the impact we have without you!  The companies, donors...

By Amy Fluno, 211 Director & Stuff the Bus Committee Member

Stuff the Bus/Stuff the Desk of south Wood County 2019 was a great success! Thanks so much to all the area businesses, organizations and individuals who donated supplies and/or money to this great cause. Did you know… many adults working in our community are not making enough to thrive? In fact they barely get by and are one emergency away from serious financial hardship.  That is why United Way of South Wood & Adams Counties has partnered with United Way of Wisconsin and other United Ways across the state to provide the 2018 ALICE Report.  ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained Employed.  It is a way of defining our families...
